My husband and I, together with another couple, had tapas here on a Thursday lunchtime at the end of March.
You cannot book a table so we arrived on spec and were fortunate to be able to get four seats together. However, there is a table at the rear of the restaurant hidden in a corner which can be booked in advance for private parties.
The ambience is a mix of contemporary and modern with a long marble-topped bar with comfy red leather-topped bar stools from where you eat your tapas.
There are plenty of staff to serve you from behind the bar and the food is prepared in full sight.
Our waitress was professional, efficient and appropriately friendly.
Our drinks order was quickly taken and menus provided. We ordered a couple of white wines and water for all of us.
Our waitress advised on how many portions to order for sharing, reassuring us that we could always order more if it was not enough.
We chose croquetas de jamón (deliciously moist and tasty); calamares andaluza (not oily and served with a pleasant mayonnaise dip); flor de calabacin ,queso de cabra (lovely combination of a large juicy courgette flower and generous portion of goat's cheese melted on top) & pimientos de padron. Unfortunately, the last dish contained mainly overly hot peppers. We all had at least one in three like that and told the waitress who immediately took them away and said we would not be charged. This was exactly the correct solution. The manager of the restaurant then tried them and confirmed they were far too hot.
For dessert two almond ice creams and a lemon sorbet were ordered and all went down exceedingly well.
To finish we had either a cortado or espresso.
The bill came to €60, including the tip, which we felt was a fair price for delicious food in a great ambience.
Tast is the much better know tapas bar in town but we felt this was head and shoulders above it and would go here in preference in future when we next fancy some tapas.
As a matter of interest there is a family link between El Camino and the Barrafina group of restaurants in London.

BAR CA NA CHINCHILLA - SUPPER

My husband and I had a light supper here on a Tuesday evening in March with a couple of friends who had just arrived in Palma from the UK. We had booked the table in advance as even on weeknights this is a popular venue.
The bar/bistro is quite small, but there is no feeling of being crammed in. It has bar height tables and stools in the front and some dining tables and chairs in the rear. We had a corner table by the window. The ambience is a welcoming eclectic mix of Mallorcan paintings and artefacts.
A husband and wife team run this establishment with great professionalism and a friendly approach.
Our drinks' order was quickly taken - white wine and a gin and tonic - and menus brought. The drinks were all more than acceptable.
We decided to ask the owner to suggest some starters and main courses which was a very good move as every dish was beyond tasty. Our starters included a perfectly moist tortilla, hand-carved jamón Serrano, sliced local cheese and mixed olives. We shared two legs of lamb with potatoes between four of us and were amazed at how tender and moist the lamb was. A very traditional Mallorcan feast.
Only one of the party was able to make room for a dessert - a small portion of ice cream - whilst the others had a small coffee to finish.
The service was at just the right pace and the engagement with us was exactly appropriate.
The bill, including tip, came to €70 per couple which we felt was extremely good value for money for the quantity and quality of our meal.
If you fancy rubbing shoulders with the locals and enjoying some good hearty Mallorcan food this is definitely an eatery to visit.
We shall be returning soon!

I went here with 3 girlfriends for an evening supper on a Monday night.
It was recommended by a Japanese friend who now lives in Mallorca as being very authentic. Although the chef is German he apparently trained in Japan.
The smallish restaurant has simple sleek lines with long tables and bench seating. The kitchen is open for diners to view and there is a slight, but not unpleasant, aroma of cooking.
We were welcomed in a friendly and professional manner and drinks were quickly brought before our waitress patiently talked us through the menu in English. As well as water, we ordered a couple of Sapporo beers and a glass of saki rice wine, all of which were more than acceptable.
One of our party was vegetarian so when we decided to share a couple of starters we chose vegetarian options. One was Edamame al Vapor which was a generous size and the beans were perfectly cooked with a very pleasant flavour. The other was Gyozas de Tofu con Verduras which were delicious little dumpling parcels. The two starters were more than enough for four of us.
For mains we chose individual Ramen noodle dishes - two chose the chicken, one chose the chicken and pork and the vegetarian chose the vegan option. The broth which the noodles and meat/vegetables were contained in was slightly spicy but not overdone. There was the right amount of noodles, but for meat-eaters there was not a huge amount of meat. Each dish was a generous size and each was deemed to be very tasty - and filling.
By the end of the mains none of us had room for a dessert but each of us had a small coffee, each well executed.
The cost per head, with tip, worked out at €20 per head which we thought was a very fair price for what we had.
If you like to try something different this might be an interesting place to try when you have tired of all the mediterranean options available in Palma.
